Everyone has a backstory, but some don’t even know what is really the truth in the backstory. Sarah Polley turns the lens inwards on her own life and seeks to fill the gaps of her family story involving her mother, Diane, who died when Polley was a young child. Secrets, lies, confusion and a hefty dose of serious sentiment all come into play in this film. If you’re a fan of docu-style flicks and so too is your mom, Stories We Tell is a good addition to this year’s viewing experience.
