[tps_header]It’s alright, you can be real with us: nobody really<\/em> cares who wins at the Oscars. Sure, we’ll be talking about it next day and it does set a precedent for the rest of the winner’s year, but, for the most part, the ceremony is a sober, self-impressed affair that we watch just to know who was wearing what<\/a> in real time. With less shenanigans than the Globes<\/a>, less spectacle than music awards shows and too many speeches that run overlong, many of us just watch the Academy Awards for a generous heaping of pretty.<\/p>\n

Each red carpet usually does present us with some surprising sartorial choices, but that said, there usually are some ladies we’ve learned to enjoy and expect some stellar looks from. Someone give their stylists a raise, pronto: here are the ones to watch this coming Oscar season:[\/tps_header]<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Priyanka Chopra might not be up for a statuette this year, but she’s still likely to dazzle nonetheless. With each red carpet this beauty’s attended, she’s slowly started to leave the shapeless Jason Wu gowns and big-bustle skirts for slinky, glittery dresses that make her look statuesque herself. Thanks for representing for the brown girls, P.C.!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Everybody’s got a favourite redhead when it comes to the red carpet. Emma Stone usually gets the job done, but Jessica Chastain is my personal favourite because she’s more a risk-taker and seems to have more fun. As someone who always guns for elegance over the twee, whether she’s rocking this blue Prada gown or a sombre black dress, Chastain usually looks savvy and in-control, reminding us that real talent doesn’t scream for attention.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Kerry Washington’s most prominent red carpet accessory for 2016 was her baby bump, but now that that’s gone, she’s jumped right back into the game with slick hair and svelte silhouettes. Washington’s makeup team helps her hit it out the park more often than anyone else on this list, but even from the neck down, Olivia Pope usually impresses because her attitude is often more charming than even that Dolce & Gabbana fit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Many ladies can make colour work, but there’s one in particular who works the colour like no other: ethereal, glowing Lupita Nyong’o. Whether in pale, green Gucci numbers or in the bustling, cheery Carolina Herrera gown pictured above, something about Nyong’o enlivens each palette and colour into a living feeling of sorts: we can’t wait to see what colour she completely dominates this time.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rooney Mara is the young queen of the red carpet avant-garde because she usually delivers on every one of her looks despite the bare minimum in hair volume and accessories. It wouldn’t shock if she once again showed up in head-to-toe Givenchy couture or a beaded Chanel but, personally, I’m hoping for more colour a la this cherry red Aouadi couture number.<\/p>\n

Just like everyone seems to have a favourite Red Carpet Red (i.e. Chastain vs. Stone), many people have a favourite amongst the Red Carpet Platinums too. Naomi Watts is a class act on each carpet, but it’s Michelle Williams who constantly tries to bring the interest. If it isn’t already obvious, I’m on team Williams, because though her choices do sometimes wash her out — I mean, this Louis Vuitton dress is gorgeous but also slightly bland, yes? — you can count on her to always take risks.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Is there anyone who delivers on flawless skin and grace as well as Cate Blanchett? (No, there isn’t.) I still gasp when I see Galadriel serve it on the red carpet and, honestly, she’s still got people talking thanks to last year’s seafoam-y, feathery Armani Priv\u00e9\u00a9.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Laverne Cox is known for showing up in unconventional colours\u00a0and silhouettes but, more than that, she always delivers flawless face toward the camera. Perhaps this year she’ll trade up the Mark Zunino threads for a larger or more predictable brand, but we’re hoping Ms. Cox never trades up the self-confidence that inspires us through the screen itself.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

If you’ve watched more than 15 seconds of any interview with Taraji P. Henson you know for a fact that nobody has more fun on the red carpet than her: she flounces, jokes and poses with such glee than you often completely forget to check on what she’s wearing. She’s known for bold, clean lines and plenty of sass, so even if she sticks to a fairly simple\u00a0Alexander Wang number like this once, chances are she’s still going to stand out on screen.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Natalie Portman’s been a red carpet regular for too long to get anything wrong: whether in slinky Dior dresses or giant Prada empire gowns that hide her baby bump, it’s likely that the worst we’ll ever be able to say about any of her outfits is that they’re always\u00a0so\u00a0pretty, they’re almost predictably<\/em> chic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
