[tps_header]Spring doesn’t just mean hay fever and denim bomber jackets: weddings come back in season once the sun comes out to play again. Instantly the passive aggressive mine-was-better social media photo shares\u00a0start flowing freely, and while for the most part it’s lovely to see people celebrate a long-awaited union, sometimes, it can get a little cloying.\u00a0I’ll say what we’re all thinking: more than once I’ve chastized myself for rolling my eyes at a real wedding, but without fail, I’ve shed a tear at more than a dozen on-screen weddings which don’t even concern real people. It’s a problem that I’m hoping other people share, because while friends are responding to RSVPs and trying to decide what to wear, I’m still thinking of my top on-screen movie moments instead:[\/tps_header]<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

It doesn’t matter of you’re Team Aidan\u00a0or Team Big: Carrie Bradshaw smashing a bouquet of peonies on Big’s head after he stood her up at the altar is perhaps more symbolic\u00a0of their entire relationship\u00a0than either the ceremony that was planned or the city hall solemnization that ended up actually happening in the Sex and the City<\/em> movie. I know that Carrie and Big are currently living in the shadowy, happily-ever-after section of their story–you know, the part that comes after the movie ends and the characters presumably go on living their normal lives–but a whole generation of women (and, if we’re being honest, gay men) got their heart broken along with Carrie in this scene, and the communal experience itself is enough to give this I-don’t a spot on this list.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Ostensibly, it was Ross and Rachel’s on-off relationship and Monica and Chandler’s eventual wedding that gave Friends<\/em> most of its relationship arcs through 10 seasons, but when the time came to wrap the show up, it’s hard to deny that Mike and Phoebe’s wedding seemed the only point of genuine, progressive growth. All the other friends found love with each other in ways that were expected if not predictable (except Joey, who is another story all unto himself and worthy of psychological study), but Pheebs–weird, off-beat Phoebe Buffay\u00a0who’d never had a chance\u00a0at a proper family–Phoebe found love with someone who was just as off-beat and good-humoured as her, and with her\u00a0family of friends by her side, she finally found someone with which to start a whole new family. Bonus points for one of the prettiest open-air weddings ever held within a 20-minute sitcom.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Before Grey’s Anatomy<\/em>\u00a0lost its focus, it was a show that took pride in reframing relationships and commitment for strong, career-focused women, and to date, nowhere is\u00a0that better displayed than in Meredith Grey and Derek Shephard’s quickie post-it wedding. At its root, a wedding is but a symbolic party and a bunch of finely tailored clothes worn on an arbitrary date, and this scene for the ages reminds us that a relationship is whatever you want it to be as long as the other half is by your side. Meredith and Derek survived more than a few tough times on this square blue post-it, constantly referring to it to remind each other of the vows written on it to begin with: characters in the show have often joked that all\u00a0Meredith and Derek had was\u00a0a piece of paper, not a real wedding, but it does seem like their paper is stronger than most of the promises their colleagues made to each other.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/em><\/p>\n

Monsoon Wedding<\/em> might be\u00a0an older classic, but it is one of the most lush and sensitive portrayals of a non-white marriage on the big screen to date. Featuring a rock-solid ensemble cast of veteran Indian actors, this under-the-surface plunge into scarred family histories and the clash between conservative mores and contemporary notions of love is as heartbreaking as it is healing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Instantly distrust anyone who tells you they watched Jim and Pam get married with dry eyes. After four\u00a0seasons of never wanting each other at the same\u00a0time and two seasons of being happier than they ever were before, when\u00a0The Office<\/em>‘s Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly finally tied the knot at Niagara, it genuinely does feel like you’re at the Falls with them, until you realize the water running down your face is actually your own tears. Few couples on this list have as much of a fan following across genres\u00a0as these guys–The Office<\/em> had us so wrapped up in its docudrama format, and Jim and Pam’s it-all-happened-at-the-workplace story line is\u00a0so familiar to so many of us that the Niagara Falls episode truly did feel like we were at a close friend’s shin-dig.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Not everyone may have grown up with The Nanny<\/em>, but for what its worth, few on-screen heroines have been as\u00a0sassy and worn as\u00a0much Moschino on camera. After Fran Drescher’s air-headed but loving yenta took five\u00a0seasons to\u00a0scored the marriage of her dreams to her on-screen boss–something that was foreshadowed from the pilot itself–worried mothers the world over breathed a sigh of relief, reassuring themselves\u00a0that if TV’s most nasal perma-spinster could find herself a man, perhaps\u00a0they didn’t need to worry about their kids that much either.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Remember that\u00a0time you watched the movie Bridesmaids<\/em> and actually forgot by the end that a wedding was about to happen? I do too: the ensemble cast in this team is solid gold, thanks in a large part to Kristen Wiig’s spirited angst and Melissa McCarthy’s gruff non-sequitor comebacks, but seeing them in their uniform bridesmaid dresses at the end is a necessary reminder that nobody likes to stand on the altar alone. The wedding goes off without a hitch, but that’s not what lands it on this list: with movie after movie portraying weddings as\u00a0a chance for women\u00a0to engage in rudely\u00a0competitive behaviours (ahem, Bride Wars<\/em>) or experience depression first-hand (ahem-hem, 27 Dresses<\/em>), it’s nice to have a wedding-themed movie remind you that you need your sister-friends in the life that’s coming ahead. Sure, you’re marrying some other dude, but your bridesmaids were there for you well before him, in most cases, and it doesn’t do to forget them on momentous occasions.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

For the record, comedy’s most beloved anti-heroine never stopped being a feminist. Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon dithered and dawdled so many years to commit to marriage\u00a0that she almost convinced herself she doesn’t care, but recovered herself at the last minute and stepped to the altar in a full Princess Leia get-up. This marriage, then, is not for nerds or feminists or even fans of the show: this marriage is for the Liz Lemon in all of us, the voice that tells you that you deserve what you really want even if it embarrasses a teensy little part of you. After fighting through her misgivings and finally admitting to herself that maybe she\u00a0does want the whole white-dress-hair-done treatment for her special day after all, Liz Lemon’s marriage is a rallying cry for people the world over to really examine how much we get in our own way when our fears distract us from what we truly want.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Some people pointedly refuse to watch Love Actually<\/em><\/a> until it’s Christmas, but it’s probably safe to say that the that gorgeous wedding scene with Keira Knightley and Chiwitel Ejiofor is priceless year-round. Perfect at capturing the nerves and swerves involved when two people join their lives–i.e. their friend circles– together, the teensy bit of uneasiness and cheekiness is lovely to see in an on-screen movie. Most movie weddings are either impossibly mannered, just a plot device or overwrought with eyes staring regretfully into the distance, but Love Actually does a smashing job at giving us what was appropriate to the time: a quick, sweet union and a gorgeous gauzy gown on Keira Knightley’s Juliet.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

With a ceremony featuring\u00a0myriad twinkle\u00a0lights, gentle acoustic music and, of course, her very best friend — her daughter Rory — by her side, Lorelai Gilmore finally tied the knot with her other best friend Luke in the very definition of a fairytale wedding last year.\u00a0For many people, the season finale of Gilmore Girls<\/em> wasn’t a satisfying closure to the Luke and Lorelai narrative: the Netflix exclusive A Year In The Life <\/em>fixed that,\u00a0finally joining one of TV’s most relatable single women with the man fans had picked for her years back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
