{"id":104516,"date":"2017-04-04T15:49:54","date_gmt":"2017-04-04T19:49:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/digiblocks.ca\/29secrets\/?p=104516"},"modified":"2019-09-12T15:58:12","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T19:58:12","slug":"on-equal-pay-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digiblocks.ca\/29secrets\/wellness\/on-equal-pay-day\/","title":{"rendered":"On Equal Pay Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Equal Pay Day in the United States which is\u00a0still a thing because we need it. Regardless of whether you live in the United States or in Canada, white men are &#8212; by default &#8212; earning more than everybody.<\/p>\n<p>In Canada, specifically, women who work full time <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/gender-pay-gap-a-persistent-issue-in-canada\/article34210790\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">earn 74.2 cents for every dollar<\/a> made by men who work full time, while women who work for an hourly wage earn 87.9 cents for every dude-earned dollar &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/file_attachments\/shortchanged_briefing_note.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">while women of colour, Indigenous women, and women\u00a0with disabilities earn even less<\/a>, which explains\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/gender-wage-gap-wef-1.3821993\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canada&#8217;s embarrassing ranking as #35<\/a> on last year&#8217;s World Economic Forum gender gap list. And for all their talk of women&#8217;s rights, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/file_attachments\/time_to_turn_feminist_words_into_action.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Liberal government hasn&#8217;t done much<\/a> (or anything) to appease it.<\/p>\n<p>And this trend also thrives\u00a0south of the border, duh. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/2017\/04\/148232\/women-wage-gap-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Where American women make 80 cents on the dollar<\/a>, black women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2017\/04\/04\/equal-pay-day-what-you-need-know\/100009994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">make only 68% of a white man&#8217;s weekly pay\u00a0and Hispanic women earn just 54%<\/a>. This shit is disgraceful and yet, here we are in the year of our lord 2017 rallying to remind our world leaders that women are people and\/or\u00a0as valuable as white men.<\/p>\n<p>But that said, when talking about the wage gap, we &#8212; white, cis, able-bodied women &#8212; have to recognize that we&#8217;ve contributed to the problem, too. It&#8217;s important\u00a0to fight for equal pay and it&#8217;s important that we get it, yes, but the\u00a0fight for equality has to include the acknowledgement that as a rule\u00a0white women are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aauw.org\/2014\/09\/18\/gender-pay-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still being paid more<\/a> than black women, Hispanic women, Indigenous women, Asian women, transgender women, disabled women and, well, honestly anybody else who isn&#8217;t white. And while it&#8217;s easy to sit here and say, &#8220;Yes, but if we\u00a0<em>all<\/em> rally for equal pay, we&#8217;ll all\u00a0<em>get<\/em> equal pay, everything will be better for everybody!&#8221; that&#8217;s not how it works.<\/p>\n<p>The economic norms\u00a0put in place are the products of a system that reflect not only sexist values, but racist, homophobic, transphobic and xenophobic values too. To devalue a person by paying them less because of\u00a0their gender\u00a0<em>and<\/em> their race\u00a0<em>and<\/em> their pronouns\u00a0<em>and, and, and<\/em> is an ugly assault on one&#8217;s\u00a0self worth. It says &#8220;Yeah, you&#8217;re not enough.&#8221; (Among many other things.) And while it sucks to know some white dude\u00a0is earning more because he&#8217;s just that, it sucks even more to know that on top of gender prejudices, there&#8217;s a shit-ton more at play. And it sucks to know that when those things\u00a0are brought up, they tend to be\u00a0glazed over with an &#8220;But we&#8217;re all in this together!&#8221; friends forever mantra despite\u00a0feminism having\u00a0a very long, sad history of being very much for white women.<\/p>\n<p>Which isn&#8217;t brand new information. Nothing I&#8217;m saying here is a surprise. No one is reading this and saying, &#8220;What?! No way &#8212; I had no clue!&#8221; Of course you did. We all did. We can see the way things work, but\u00a0it&#8217;s been easier to avoid digging into centuries-old history than it is to reconcile the fact that white women have screwed\u00a0up, too. It sucks to earn less than men, but it&#8217;s sucks\u00a0even more that our brand of feminism has been so non-inclusive that it&#8217;s\u00a0left anyone who isn&#8217;t white or cis or hetero out of more than a few processes, subsequently\u00a0financially and economically fucking them.<\/p>\n<p>And Equal Pay Day is an important opportunity\u00a0to bring this shit up to the surface. It&#8217;s important not just to remind your politicians and MPs and senators and municipal, provincial, state, and federal leaders that &#8220;equal pay&#8221; means\u00a0<em>equal pay<\/em> &#8212; for\u00a0<em>all women<\/em>. (And that&#8217;s where phone calls and letters and attending council meetings come in.) But it&#8217;s important to look at what you&#8217;re doing, too. Are you hiring diversely? Are you paying everybody the same? Is there space for everybody? If there isn&#8217;t, are you asking why? And are you actively trying to make some? Did you shut up and listen when you were being confronted with facts about another woman&#8217;s reality? Did you raise hell where you could raise it?\u00a0Did you donate to Oxfam or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/issues\/womens-rights\/womens-rights-workplace\/equal-pay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ACLU<\/a>\u00a0or an organization you feel is doing important work? Did you protest? Did you educate yourself? You have so many options. You are powerful. You can change things.<\/p>\n<p>The wage gap is frustrating and it is shitty and it is real, but it only shrinks upon action.
