This track (among many) exemplifies Ariana\u2019s evolution into \u201cwoman who\u2019s seen and been through some shit,\u201d and that\u2019s an ethos backed up by lines in \u201c7 Rings\u201d and the entirety of \u201cGhostin\u201d in which she explores the grief and heartbreak of losing ex-boyfriend Mac Miller while still engaged to Pete Davidson. (I mean, allegedly. It\u2019s not like she prefaces her music with a quick, \u201cThis song is about . . .\u201d Thank goodness.)<\/p>\n<p>Because <em>thank u, next<\/em> is the singer\u2019s declaration that in the wake of tragedy and sorrow and revelations and everything we\u2019ve seen Grande endure, her narrative will remain hers to dictate. She is strong. She is flawed. She is profound. And she is petty. Ultimately, Ariana Grande is a human being. And instead of fronting as anything else, she\u2019s chosen not to let any of us forget what she is: a person.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_115819\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115819\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-115819 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/digiblocks.ca\/29secrets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ariana-Grande-Thank-You-Next-Album.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digiblocks.ca\/29secrets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ariana-Grande-Thank-You-Next-Album.jpg 300w, https:\/\/digiblocks.ca\/29secrets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ariana-Grande-Thank-You-Next-Album-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/digiblocks.ca\/29secrets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ariana-Grande-Thank-You-Next-Album-85x85.jpg 85w, https:\/\/digiblocks.ca\/29secrets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ariana-Grande-Thank-You-Next-Album-170x170.jpg 170w, https:\/\/digiblocks.ca\/29secrets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Ariana-Grande-Thank-You-Next-Album-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Ariana Grande dropped her much anticipated album Thank U, Next on Friday and it&#8217;s full of wit and wonder<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Which is powerful. First, it\u2019s powerful to release two full-length pop albums within a year of each other (see: work ethic), and it\u2019s powerful to make the second record a contradiction of what she delivered last year. I mean, yes: most of us are walking contradictions. But in a climate where relatability is a currency, it\u2019s still rare for a pop star to do an about-face and present themselves as somebody who is still in-process; as someone whose brand doesn\u2019t hinge on anything other than, \u201cHere\u2019s where I\u2019m at right now.\u201d It\u2019s as risky as it is generous. Because Ariana may owe us nothing (truly, she owes us not a thing), but there\u2019s still a chance that we may not like who she\u2019s become. Just like there\u2019s always a chance that the people we have in our own lives may not like the people we morph into as we continue to change and grow.<\/p>\n<p>But Grande doesn\u2019t seem to care. And instead of breeding a persona that stands outside of her authentic self, she leads with that self and dares us to have anything to say about it. She is who she is, and if we can\u2019t handle her at her \u201cBreak Up with Your Girlfriend, I\u2019m Bored\u201d she knows we don\u2019t deserve her at her \u201cthank u, next.\u201d And then she will say that to you. Which makes anybody listening revel in the discovery that maybe it\u2019s possible to live this way; that maybe you can still be successful and loved and accepted by flying the flag that is entirely you. And that between now and a year, we might not be who we are in this moment. And that\u2019s okay, because that\u2019s the most interesting. That\u2019s the most realistic. It\u2019s also the easiest way to live.<\/p>\n<p>We are all the sum of our pasts and ideas and life lessons and traumas, anyway. And no, our own experiences may not compare to that of a famous millionaire. And no, we certainly don\u2019t know the details of her life or her relationships or her thought process (and we aren\u2019t privy to it, anyway). But it is another testament to the power of being one\u2019s self.
