These friendships span through decades with young and older female squads coming together for jokes and tears, and we’re in full support. Rewinding through our past, it’s hard to forget those mainstay girl troupes, but in case you have, here are 10 of the best \u02dc90s TV and movie\u00a0girl cliques that made memories we should never forget.[\/tps_header]<\/p>\n

Daria\u00a0and Jane from\u00a0Daria<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Daria was the \u02dc90s misfit character not really seen on screen before, especially in female form. After being written as a character on Beavis and Butthead<\/em>,\u00a0the spinoff got some serious legs and MTV struck gold. The woman behind Daria’s monotone voice, Tracy Grandstaff (who’s now a VP at Comedy Central), was not just the voice behind the banter, but she was part of the writing team as well. Who doesn’t love watching high school antics play out through deadpan humour and spoonfuls of sarcasm? Daria spoke the truths many of us feel inside, but we often end up smiling with I really can’t stand you\u009d eyes instead, perhaps this is why we loved the show so much. Daria and Jane’s sound relationship (even being cool with sharing the same guy) pushed varying viewpoints yet somehow the two always found common ground. Their unbreakable bond reinforced the strength of a solid gal pal with whom life feels just a little better beside. Plus, quotes like I hate this place,\u009d reminded us we were not alone. In sum, we get you D and\u00a0J, we get you.<\/p>\n

Golden Girls<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It feels only fitting to include one of the best female squads, all seemingly representing a medley of relatable gals. The feisty Blanche (Rue McClanahan), naive Rose (Betty White), dry-witted Dorothy (Bea Arthur) and unapologetic matriarch, Sophia (Estelle Getty), all tackled controversial issues including gay marriage, teen pregnancy and AIDS. Not only did the ensemble make for a bevy of random screen moments, but the Golden Girls<\/em> gave us quite possibly the most staple theme song<\/a> ever. It’s OK to sing to yourself now. The show ran from 1985 to 1992, but even after its finale and countless reruns that still never tire, new generations of females embraced the solid relations the ladies made. Yet, there may be no bigger fan than Summer Roberts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now and\u00a0Then <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The cast from this 1995 flick gave us insight at both young and older ages, delivered through talent such as Christina Ricci, Demi Moore, Gaby Hoffman, Thora Birch, Melanie Griffith and Rosie O’Donnell. The movie presents a coming-of-age story with disparaging story lines, yet everything circles back to the core of everlasting friendships. This is that movie that rewinds to those growing pains which seemingly never end, even when we think we have it all figured out. The beauty of Now and\u00a0Then<\/em>: we don’t know it all and never will, but having friends to vent, cry and laugh with sure helps life make a bit more sense.<\/p>\n

Angela and\u00a0Rayanne from My So-Called Life<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"my_so-called_life_pilot_2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

How was this show only on for one season?! From infidelity to gender identification, sex to alcohol and drugs, to the epitome of school crushes (Jordan Catalano 4EVER), My So Called Life<\/em>\u00a0was an authentic voice for teenagers. More so, it was the budding friendship of safe-shy Angela and wild child Rayanne. These two had a lot of ups and downs with each often being impenitent to one another, yet they somehow figured it out. Chances are you resonated with one (or both) of these characters, they were pretty spot on and that’s what drew us in. Sure there were other parts to the saga (i.e. Angela’s former BFF, Sharon), but the ongoing trials fought in and out of school always saw Angela and Rayanne as its muses. It was also nice to see their respective mothers playing important roles in the show, highlighting the mother-daughter relationships that hits close to home for many.<\/p>\n

Felicity & Julie from\u00a0Felicity<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Felicity\"<\/a><\/p>\n

She spoke her truths to the recorder and held yearbook notes in high regard, Felicity was a girl that was constantly trying to make sense of everything. Thankfully after following her high school crush to New York, she teamed up with spunky Julie and together the two partied and parented one another through their formidable college days. The storyline between Julie and Felicity wasn’t always roses and rainbows, and perhaps one of the toughest to watch was Felicity trying to handle Julie dating the love her life (Ben). It was the harsh realities that punched us in the gut and those waking afterthoughts that kept us glued to Felicity and Julie’s meanderings throughout the show’s four-season run.<\/p>\n

Amanda and Busy from Ready or Not<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Ready<\/a><\/p>\n

Ready or Not<\/em> was like Canada’s version of Felicity<\/em>, but made before Felicity<\/em>\u00a0came to fruition. The show was surrounded around the lives of two youthful ladies, Amanda and Busy, who were complete opposites in many ways. Amanda was the girly girl\u009d while Busy was happily a tomboy all about her drum kit. The two had an unbreakable bond and were always by each other’s sides, helping make sense of whatever rolled through. Their families weren’t perfect and that made for a constant balancing act between home and school antics, but regardless if it was teenage initiations like 7 minutes in heaven,\u009d interracial dating, or period problems (remember when Busy’s dad had to get her supplies?), these two females waded through teenage terrain with ultimate sincerity and awkwardness, which was refreshing to watch. Who didn’t have photo booth photos of their BFFs? It was a rite of passage.<\/p>\n

Sex and the City<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Sex<\/a><\/p>\n

Could there be a list of this nature without the quintessential cast of Sex and the City<\/em>? We all have analyzed and learned about womanhood through the words and behaviour of this foursome. Whether you’re a Samantha, Charlotte, Miranda or Carrie, these diverse and relatable characters made those dark days better. Sure, many will never understand how a freelance writer can afford so many shoes, but that doesn’t matter because at the end of it all the show illustrated strength among women. Men were the accessories while the women were the wardrobe, and that in itself is a lesson worth celebrating. And, let’s be serious: the plotlines were bloody incredible.<\/p>\n

Rachel, Monica and\u00a0Phoebe from Friends<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"90s-girl-cliques\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The ladies of Friends<\/em>\u00a0were like a hearty sandwich filled with sass. Watching Monica the neurotic clean freak chef, Rachel the fashion-hungry waitress-turned-business woman and Phoebe the jokey massage therapist, squabble and support each other over ten seasons is hard to forget. The trio were hilarious and proved helpful when showing the lads how to score (remember the number diagram?). These ladies had us all dying inside. Regardless of their fleeting differences, Monica, Rachel and Phoebe showed that being a woman is one hell of a ride.<\/p>\n

Blossom and\u00a0Six from Blossom<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Blossom<\/a><\/p>\n

Flower hats were all the rage in \u02dc90s and the biggest spokeswomen for this were none other than Blossom and speed-speech Six. Blossom and Six shared clothes, tears and both rallied together as daughters of divorced folks. It was rare to not see an episode of Six skipping through the Russo’s front door and inside her bestie’s room, where much of their friendship blossomed (I had to!). While Blossom was more demure and subdued, the energy that Six provided made for quality entertainment and a whole lot of feels between the ladies throughout five seasons. Everyone needs a friend like Six to make the mundane a bit more sane.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A League of Their Own<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Talk about girl squad\u201dwe fell in love with these ladies who showed a beyond inspiring camaraderie. All the Way Mae, Dottie Hinson, Betty Spaghetti and Doris Murphy were the real deal and while the film was fictionalized, the story was taken from the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). Together these strong females showed their role in sport and play, even making a believer out of their grumpy of a coach, Jimmy Dugan, played by Tom Hanks. Fun fact: before the actresses began filming they trained eight hours a day, six days a week for over seven months, honing their baseball skills.
