[tps_header]For those of us in our twenties\u00a0and thirties, the golden age of music was the ’80s and ’90s (and, okay the ’00s<\/a> as well). We\u00a0lived<\/em>\u00a0for anthems derived during this time, proof of which extended from our iPod shuffles to our school talent shows; (raise your hand if you’ve done at least one\u00a0choreographed\u00a0dance routine or five to something off the\u00a0Backstreet’s Back<\/em>\u00a0album). Rock and punk pumped through our blood streams and our Discmans and showed us (and our poor parents) the true meaning of attitude. And just like that bus driver who still rocks her frosted mullet with pride and conviction, we remain dutifully attached to our ’80s and ’90s jams. This golden age of music was chock-full of one-hit-wonders but also talented musicians who pioneered modern music trends and made the burgeoning industry what it is today. Lucky for us, some of those bands and artists are still around, still touring, still producing killer music and still sporting that black eyeliner that nobody really understood… but you keep doing you, Billie Joe.\u00a0Check out these six bands and artists who have achieved the ultimate pop culture success: staying relevant.\u00a0[\/tps_header]<\/p>\n

Green Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"green<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1986, Green Day was formed by Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt. Complete with tattoo sleeves, leather vests, arbitrary chains and hair your mother would hate, this punky pair became a punky trio, who gave us anthems like, “When I Come Around” and “Good Riddance,” songs that would later go on to define the ’90s. The band topped charts and raked in Grammy’s until the late ’90s when they saw a decline in their commercial success. (But gun to your head, who doesn’t know every single word to “Boulevard of Broken Dreams\u009d?) In 2016, the band is still dutifully putting in studio time, hinting at some new music to be released this year, according to Billie Joe’s Instagram<\/a>. But a rock star’s Instagram is a reputable source, right?<\/p>\n

Red Hot Chili Peppers<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"RHCP1\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Okay, every time I hear the 1999 hit, “Otherside,” I get in my broodiest state of mind, drop my voice eight octaves and start singing. And I know I’m not the only one. RHCP is one of those bands that are pretty universally liked, with songs that reflect the true angst and melancholy of the ’90s. Not only are songs like “Can’t Stop,” “Californication,” and “Under the Bridge,” still beloved, but the band is still actively touring, with a new freshly launched album\u00a0The Getaway<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>available now.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gwen\u00a0Stefani<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everything\u00a0about Gwen Stefani during her No Doubt days, from her high, accidental-facelift pony tail to her plaid paperboy hat, screams ’90s. In 1992 the band released their self-titled album,\u00a0No Doubt<\/em>, and following in 1995 they released\u00a0Tragic Kingdom<\/em>, which included timeless singles like “Just a Girl,” and “Don’t Speak.” Though No Doubt hasn’t produced anything new since 2003, the platinum blond pop princess that is Gwen Stefani is still totally killing it. This past March, she released her highly anticipated solo album,\u00a0This is What the Truth Feels like, <\/em>and did a stint on SNL (plus has a new man in her life). (P.S. If you haven’t already seen her Space Pants skit<\/a> with\u00a0Game of Thrones’<\/em>\u00a0Peter Dinklage, you can go ahead and open up a new tab and DO THAT RN PLEASE.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

Madonna<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"madonna\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1983 a fresh-faced, big-haired force-to-be-reckoned-with entered the pop music scene, taking it by storm no less, with the release of her album\u00a0Madonna.\u00a0<\/em>The Madonna we knew back then and the Madonna we know and love today (in a leotard, belting her heart out at award shows in her free time) are not so different. She’s still stylish, still mega talented and is still rocking as much naked thigh on the reg as Pamela Anderson in\u00a0Baywatch<\/em>. Having sold more than 300 million records to date,\u00a0Madonna is\u00a0recognized as the best selling female recording artist of all time by Guinness World Records. If that doesn’t make her eternally relevant, soak in the fact that this 57 year icon is still touring and released a brand new album,\u00a0Rebel Heart,<\/em>\u00a0just last year. And I’m doubtful that she’s anywhere near done wow-ing our leotards off.<\/p>\n

Blink-182<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"blink-182\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Blink-182 is coming to Canada (Montebello and Toronto, to be exact). Millennials, rejoice! Formed in 1992, this American band is considered something of a pioneer of the pop punk genre, and have a heavily accoladed history which includes a coveted spot on the Billboard Top 100 chart for their song, “All the Small Things.” The members of Blink-182 put a face to ’90s angst and rebel culture, with their totally outrageous lyrical stylings, (“S**t, Piss, F**k” anyone?), and caviler nudity, (“What’s My Age Again”). Their new album,\u00a0California,<\/em>\u00a0is scheduled for release in July of this year (but you can hear their first single “Bored To Death” here<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bon Jovi<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jon Bon Jovi turned 54 this year, not that you could tell from his flawless cheekbones. Nonetheless, he’s come a long way from his trademark snug pants and shaggy hair days (hair that was so trademark, in fact, that a cut in the ’90s made headlines on CNN) and so has his band, Bon Jovi. “Born To Be My Baby,” “Wild In The Streets,” and “I’ll Be There For You,” secured the band commercial fame in the late ’80s, as well as a loyal following for life. Bon Jovi is one of the world’s best selling bands of all time,\u00a0having sold more than 130 million records\u00a0globally, making them a force to be reckoned with\u201d(even if they are nearly your grandparents’ age). This House is Not for Sale<\/em> is the band’s 14th studio album and is set for release in September of this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
