[tps_header]Regardless of what stage of life you’re at, there’s always room for learning. Some go to their parents for advice, others dive into literature and many go straight to television to find out how to deal with life. There’s something very reassuring\u00a0about reliving old episodes of your favourite TV shows, specifically those shows that helped get you through another aching day. The characters spoke to you, you felt the frustration and after the credits started rolling, you anxiously awaited the next episode so you could release all over again.\u00a0Here are eight meaningful TV shows that provided much needed support and won us over with their emotional chokeholds.[\/tps_header]<\/p>\n

One Tree Hill<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"One<\/a><\/p>\n

Where would we all be without Lucas, Brooke, Peyton, Nathan and Haley, really? Each character had their unique quirks and struggles, giving us the lessons of life we were in desperate need of. The plot line was brilliant and the music found on the OTH<\/em> playlist was second to none, debatably the best from a TV show, ever. Acts like Dashboard Confessional, Nada Surf and Band of Horses are among the notable inclusions and their songs made the scenes bleed with even more emotion. Also, Bethany Joy Lenz’s (who played Haley) original tunes were perfect additions to the sentimental show script. Talented actors touching on subject matter like love triangles, suicides, teenage angst, addiction and heartbreak combined with hella cool music is the equation to a successful show, and this is one that gripped on so many levels.<\/p>\n

7th Heaven<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"7th<\/a><\/p>\n

As WB’s biggest success story, 7th<\/span>\u00a0Heaven<\/em> was a show that spoke on tough subjects through the lens of a Christian-focused family. Running for 11\u00a0seasons (the final season being aired on the CW), the show acted as a safe haven where good and bad choices were always discussed. Case in point: this scene<\/a>. The core of the show was surrounded around the Camden household and the challenge of raising kids was presented both from a parental and a youthful approach. It celebrated open dialogue and strong morals amongst a family that was not perfect, but somehow always found the perfect answer. Stephen Collins, who played the central father figure in the show, had his very own scandal<\/a>, but that shouldn’t take away from the teachings experienced on 7th<\/span>\u00a0Heaven<\/em>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Wonder Years<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Ben Savage may have made Boy Meets World<\/em> a big hit (which is another really great show for teachable moments, btw), but it was his older brother that first wowed TV audiences. Fred Savage played Kevin Arnold, the youngest of three siblings in a middle-class American family. Arnold’s character narrated each episode, giving an introspective understanding into the mind of a young boy. Even the theme song<\/a> still gets me choked up, instantly catapulting me to my parent’s basement where I’d eat Cool Ranch Doritos and watch the show with my older brothers. Everyone knew of a guy like Wayne and there was always that girl like Winnie, not to mention a friend like Paul. The characters made for quality programming that made you sob, laugh, and reflect on your own life, and with a dad like Jack Arnold there was always quality entertainment.<\/p>\n

Gilmore Girls<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Gilmore<\/a><\/p>\n

There’s a reason why there was such pandemonium when it was announced Gilmore Girls<\/em><\/a> would be returning after a nearly nine-year hiatus, bringing with it four new episodes\u201dpeople actually lived<\/em> for this show. Now that Netflix has once again saved the day, fans will get to reunite with their Stars Hollow friends, the ones that crushed out more pop culture references than many of its competitors (Dawson’s Creek<\/em> is up there too, though). The show is centered around Rory (played by Alexis Bledel) and her mother Lorelai (played by Lauren Graham), and their dynamic dealings through the thick and thin of life’s problems. There’s the bad boy boyfriend, the challenges of being a smart woman, the struggle of being a single mother, the relationships between parents and their children\u201dit’s all there, and you can expect that to return soon<\/a> to help you make sense of things again.<\/p>\n

Sex and the City<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"baby-talk-is-cheap-1920\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The ladies of Sex and the City<\/em> made us laugh, cry, snicker and slap each other’s hands in harmony because they spoke our language. We found out it’s OK to talk sexually, it’s OK to be afraid of kids, it’s OK to not fit into a specific woman\u009d mold, it’s OK to challenge men, it’s OK to order take out every night, and most of all\u201dit’s OK to be whomever we damn feel like. Sex and the City<\/em> is a show that will continue to shape generations because of its honest portrayal of women (and men) and its stress on tackling issues of substance, the stuff we’re all talking about anyway. Call it clich\u00e9\u00a9 or not, but after some heavy moments IRL nothing feels better than a glass of wine and a date with the ladies of SATC<\/em>, they always have your back. Fun fact: a study<\/a> out of Ohio State University found that undergrads who watched a Sex and the City<\/em> episode were more than twice as likely to talk to their partners about sexual health issues.\u009d<\/p>\n

Roseanne<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"roseanne\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Some may bash Roseanne<\/em> for being trailer park programming\u009d or whatever, but these are the people that seemingly miss the relevance of it. At the time seeing a woman in a lead role was dismal. And, watching a family that was more than rough around the edges and anything but rich was not broadcasted before Roseanne<\/em>. This was not your Brady Bunch<\/em> type of family and that’s exactly what made it great. The parenting approaches weren’t all about hugs and sweet talk: there was screaming, there were extreme arguments, there were lies\u201dby golly it looks like a real family. Still, through all the heated times there was\u00a0a plethora of hilarious skits, acting and dialogue that showed you didn’t need to be rich to be happy. It was nice to flip on the TV and watch characters battle through their problems because who wants to see a perfect sing-a-long sitcom? Halloween episodes like this<\/a> were the best therapy for a bad day.<\/p>\n

Fringe<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Fringe\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Fringe<\/em> might not come to mind when thinking about therapeutic times, but it should. The emotional struggle between father and son combined with the unbelievable work synopsis made for drama at its finest. Then throw in an actress like Anna Torv and you get a trio that brings you on a rollercoaster of jolting moments and realizations, pushing and pulling those heartstrings and adding sound advice along the way. There was so much heart on this show, making for scenarios around death, love, abandonment, hopelessness, etc., that were fittingly helpful in explaining the workings of the inner self, all while the suspense was endlessly exciting to follow. Seriously, who didn’t let out a good cry while watching Walter and Peter try to learn to love one another? Or when Walter wrote that letter? Or when Olivia recalled her traumatic childhood? There was a lot of psychological knowledge that came out of this show and that made for many important life takeaways.<\/p>\n

The O.C.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

Before reality TV hit us hard, there were shows like The O.C.<\/em>, a modernized Beverly Hills 90210<\/em>. Sure there were clich\u00e9\u00a9s and over-the-top acting moments, but the spark between Seth and Summer, the turmoil between Marissa and Ryan, the quirk of the Cohen family, the teenage learnings Luke endured, the California lifestyle, the conniving Oliver types\u201dit was a show that had many layers. We learned a lot about friendships and navigating the high school terrain. We listened to Rooney<\/a> and had our very own Princess Sparkle. This was a show that showed how privileged rich kids live, but also how crappy being a teenager can be, regardless if you have lot of money and influence, or not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
