[tps_header]Each year TV premiere weeks promise slogans like the hottest and biggest thing to hit primetime\u009d and you don’t want to miss it,\u009d baiting us into thinking we’re about to play witness to a revolution of some kind.<\/p>\n

So, we begin tuning in each week to see the soap opera unfold, whether that is through laughs or blood\u201dwe start to get hooked. Then without warning, the show gets\u00a0cancelled and so too goes our\u00a0favourite reason to stay home. Some networks give more opportunity to program growth than others. FOX is notorious for putting the emphasis on the first couple of episodes to see if viewership warrants a third, but it’s still the most watched network.\u00a0Lately there has been more options\u00a0for shows to distribute through\u00a0online outlets like Netflix. Then there\u00a0are\u00a0shows like Nashville<\/em>, which was cancelled last spring only to find new legs within the CMT Network<\/a>, a typically non-scripted network with no ties to drama shows.<\/p>\n

But, then there are shows that just seemingly aren’t ever coming back, and\u00a0why they were cancelled in the first place is still baffling.<\/p>\n

Here are nine\u00a0TV shows that really way too short lived.[\/tps_header]<\/p>\n

Freaks and Geeks<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ran for: 1 season (1999 \u201c 2000)<\/p>\n

Franco, Siegel, Rogen\u201dthey’re household names now, but in ’99 this coming-of-age dramaedy just didn’t get green lit for round two. Now, over 15 years later there’s a good chance it would be a massive hit, but Judd Apatow and company have moved on so I guess we should too. So the real\u00a0question is: which is the better breed, freaks or geeks?<\/p>\n

Ringer<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ran for: 1 season (2011 \u201c 2012)<\/p>\n

When news broke that Sarah Michelle Gellar would be back on a primetime drama, one that was seeing two of her, Buffy<\/em> fans were in bliss. Produced by Nicole Snyder (one of the folks behind the CW hit\u00a0Supernatural<\/em>), Ringer had convoluted plot lines with continuous twists and mind tricks and\u00a0for some people that was just too much to follow. There were also\u00a0comparisons to Revenge,<\/em> which could have dampened the appeal. SMG was so good in her role(s) that’s it’s a real shame we didn’t get to see more of the good vs. evil, a.k.a. Bridget versus Siobhan drama. It could also be argued that Gellar has been typecast as Buffy Summers forever.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Veronica Mars<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ran for: 3 seasons (2004 \u201c 2007)<\/p>\n

Chances are if you’re a big Kristen Bell fan, that admiration started in the mid \u02dc00s and was probably due to this show. A modern day Nancy Drew, Bell was a softer version of Marvel’s Jessica Jones<\/em> in many ways. When it was cancelled there was such Veronica Mars<\/em>\u00a0blues that a Kickstarter campaign<\/a>\u00a0was created to try and bring it back. Its goal was to raise $2 million to help create a feature film, which was accomplished in just 10\u00a0hours. Although it wasn’t a full return, the feature film filled the void in 2014, receiving industry praise and scoring 79 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Happy Endings<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ran for: 3\u00a0seasons (2011 \u201c 2013)<\/p>\n

OK so this just wasn’t fair at all. The show had dynamic characters played by a quintessential cast, with Canada’s sweetheart, Elisha Cuthbert, making her TV return since she\u00a0exited\u00a024<\/em>. So Alex (played by Cuthbert) left Dave at the altar, they still had their mutual friends Jane, Penny, Max and Brad there to pull it\u00a0together with such deadpan humour and comedic timing\u201ddare I compare it to Friends<\/em>? Seriously,\u00a0rewatch this<\/a> and tell me you don’t miss the gang.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Game of Silence<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Game<\/a><\/p>\n

Ran for: 1 Season (2016)<\/p>\n

There’s still a sliver of hope for this show, there just has to be. The subject matter was heavy: childhood friends who’d been assaulted at the hands of a filthy warden at a detention facility. The kids have since reunited decades later and are seeking revenge after one of their squad is killed. The show was loosely based on the movie Sleepers.\u00a0<\/em>According to Deadline<\/a>, <\/em>the show\u00a0<\/em>wasn’t pulling in the numbers, particularly in the 18-49 live\/same-day ratings. At least Shades of Blue<\/em> got a second season, and let’s just hope NBC’s newest drama\u00a0This Is Us <\/em>makes an imprint after losing such a gem.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Black Donnellys<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ran for: 1 season (2007)<\/p>\n

How did a show co-created by the great Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby<\/em>, Crash<\/em>) not succeed past its first year? The show was based on a real Irish family that emigrated to Ontario and although the original family had multiple casualties, this on-screen family escaped New York’s street ring of death on a weekly basis, somehow. It starred Olivia Wilde, who showed some serious acting chops following her stint on The O.C<\/em>. This show smacked hard and\u00a0warranted more of an inside look into organized crime and Wahlberg-esque upbringings. Here’s the first episode<\/a> in case you forget what a solid pilot can look like.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Get Real<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ran for: 1 season (1999 \u201c 2000)<\/p>\n

The FOX drama followed the lives of the Green family, consisting of perfect daughter Meghan (Anne Hathaway), bullied son Kenny (Jesse Eisenberg) and macho beefcake Cameron (Eric Christian Olsen). The show was raw and playful, introspective and weird, and although the siblings looked nothing like each other, it was still believable that they were a family. It was the show that you learned from without it being too overbearing, and one that you’ll randomly think about when you’re at your folks and everyone is arguing over the bathroom.<\/p>\n

Temptation Island\u00a0(USA)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ran for: 2 seasons (2001 \u201c 2003)<\/p>\n

Before The<\/em> Bachelor<\/em> made its mark, there were a number of reality-dating shows and Temptation Island<\/em> was one you should not forget. It was scandalous. Couples going to a remote island to test their love with (and often without) the other during the overnight? You witnessed enough craziness on each 60-minute episode to fulfill your weekly what am I doing with my life?\u009d intake. Was it too hot for TV? Maybe, but with what we’ve seen in recent years (cough\u00a6\u00a0Dating Naked<\/em>) perhaps it’s time for a revival. Watching couples\u009d cry, cheat and lie is just so guiltily entertaining. Then again there can only be one Chris Harrison and Temptation Island<\/em> host, Mark L. Walberg, is a carbon copy of Harrison so… maybe that played a factor in the battle of the primetime host bros.<\/p>\n

Also, don’t forget about Paradise Hotel<\/em>, another classic gone too soon.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Dirty Sexy Money<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ran for: 2 seasons (2007 \u201c 2009)<\/p>\n

The amount of promotion ABC did for this show was unbelievable. Stick acclaimed actors like Peter Kraus and Donald Sutherland into a telling drama based on power and fortunes, slap in some selfish socialites within a city like New York and you’d think nothing would excite people more. The show was\u00a0centred around the Darling family, its class expectations and how much hatred (and attention) the mess of a family could\u00a0attract. Despite mediocre ratings in its first season, ABC did take a chance on the show and renewed for season two, but unfortunately that was as far as it got, which is an utter shame. Who doesn’t like watching rich people self-destruct? Re-watching this<\/a>\u00a0brings it all back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
