Whether you’re in your twenties or your fifties, it’s important to remember the words of the late and great talent, Aaliyah Age ain’t nothing but a number<\/a>,\u009d and inspiration can come from anyone at any point in your life.<\/p>\n

So you want to be a chef but you’re 25 and can’t cook? You may be surprised the age that culinary icon,\u00a0Julia Child learned her way around the kitchen (find out below). In addition to Child, here are remarkable women who’ve achieved success regardless of their age, removing stigma and criticism from the conversation and instead inspiring hard work, dedication, and sometimes, a bit of luck.<\/p>\n

Have a look at eight\u00a0women from food, fashion, TV, film, beauty and media that have a notable name we won’t soon forget.\u00a0[\/tps_header]<\/p>\n

Oprah Winfrey<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oprah Winfrey is worth an estimated $2.8 billion and\u00a0the super-famed\u00a0talk show host and media mogul\u00a0first\u00a0landed her daytime stardom at the age of 32. Oprah’s early, tough\u00a0beginnings\u00a0have been well documented including her being sexually abused at age 9<\/a>. However,\u00a0that didn’t stop the now 62-year-old from forging her own powerful dialogue via\u00a0TV, film and publishing, proving you can be\u00a0the master of your own fate if you choose to. Heck, she even has her OWN\u00a0network. According to Forbes<\/em><\/a>, Oprah Winfrey is number two on the list of America’s Self-Made Women (2016).<\/p>\n

Vera Wang
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before Vera Wang became synonymous with the bridal industry she was a journalist\u00a0and a professional figure skater. Wang\u00a0was even inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame<\/a> in 2009, joining former\u00a0inductees\u00a0such as Kristi Yamaguichi, Dorothy Hamill and Tara Lipinski. She\u00a0spent 15 years at Vogue<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0became senior fashion editor at the age of 23. First hired at the company as a temporary assistant, Wang pushed her way through the competition. It wasn’t until 1990 that she began her foray into the bridal world and opened Bridal House Ltd., on Madison Avenue in New York City. She was 41. She introduced her first ready-to-wear collection in 2000 at age 51. In an interview<\/a>\u00a0Wang talked candidly about the art of her business and partnerships saying, “You are there to grow a business together [and] you have a brand to protect. You have to be able to strike that business relationship where they don’t feel it’s us against them or them against us. We are all trying to come together with something that works financially, artistically, and is mutually beneficial.”<\/p>\n

Kathryn Bigelow

Kathryn Bigelow is\u00a0the first woman to win an Oscar for the Best Director category, an award\u00a0she won for The Hurt Locker<\/em>.<\/a> She remains the sole female to win the award in the 86-year history of the Academy Awards, and she was 58 when she claimed the coveted prize. Among her many big\u00a0wins to remember was also\u00a0The Hurt Locker<\/em>‘s\u00a0BAFTA Award for Best Direction, where she\u00a0beat out James Cameron’s film, Avatar (<\/em>he also happened to be her husband at the time). Not only has she been pivotal in shining the spotlight on female directors, but Bigelow has been a crusader for women’s rights and gender equality in Hollywood. She’s also not afraid to stir controversy with her films<\/a>,\u00a0as was seen with her 2012 movie, Zero Dark Thirty<\/em>. “I have always firmly believed that every director should be judged solely by their work, and not by their work based on their gender,” she told TIME<\/em>. “Hollywood is supposedly a community of forward thinking and progressive people yet this horrific situation for women directors persists…gender discrimination stigmatizes our entire industry. Change is essential. Gender neutral hiring is essential.”<\/p>\n

J.K. Rowling
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

A remarkable “rags to riches” story comes from none other than the author of the acclaimed\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em>\u00a0series, J.K. Rowling. At age 30 she finished the first manuscript of\u00a0the now superstar famous book, which\u00a0helped her go from single mom, living on UK state benefits to living as\u00a0a multi-millionaire. The first entry, 1997’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone<\/em>,\u00a0has sold over 400 million copies worldwide<\/a>\u00a0and helped spin a franchise that is estimated to be\u00a0over $25 billion.\u00a0Keeping on the billion chat–Rowling\u00a0was the first billionaire novelist reported as being worth $1 billion (although she did get knocked off Forbes<\/em>‘ list<\/a>, but only because she was “too charitable”). Still, she is one of the most recognizable self-made billionaires ever. She is living proof that one’s\u00a0claim to billionaire fame can come without warning.<\/p>\n

Shirley Temple
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Okay, so she may not have been a grown woman, but Shirley Temple proved stardom can come at any age. She started\u00a0her acting career at age three and soon her strong talent in singing, acting and dancing caught big time\u00a0attention. She was only six-years-old when she catapulted into the spotlight on Bright Eyes<\/em>. By age ten, she had become the number one box office draw four years in a row thanks to her roles in Stand Up and Cheer<\/em>, Little Miss Marker<\/em> and Curly Top<\/em>. In fact, her popularity is what helped 20th Century Fox move forward without being\u00a0swallowed into bankruptcy, actually making\u00a0it into the 21st Century. Temple received her very own special kid sized Oscar and even then President Franklin D. Roosevelt boasted she was the “nation’s greatest weapon against the Depression”. All that for a pint-sized, curly haired, multi-talented kid that lived on with\u00a0global icon\u00a0praise until her death in 2014 at the age of 85.<\/p>\n

Julia Child<\/strong><\/p>\n

Julia Child may be best known for taking French cuisine and making it relatable to the modern American kitchen plus\u00a0bringing gourmet cooking to the masses, but did you know her original aspiration\u00a0was to be a famed novelist?\u00a0After working as a copywriter in advertising, a typist for the U.S. Information Agency, a research assistant in the Secret Intelligence division of the OSS (Office of Strategic Services, which was part of the CIA), and a researcher helping develop shark repellent, she switched gears to the culinary world and began training. Her first cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking<\/em>, was published in 1961 when she was nearly 50. She soon broke into TV and The French Chef<\/em> was formed with her at the helm. The show\u00a0also helped her win\u00a0an Emmy and made her the first educational television personality to receive such an award. Check out all of her accolades<\/a> that continued to roll in\u00a0right up to the culinary legend’s\u00a0death in 2004.<\/p>\n

Marissa Mayer<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the age of 37, Marissa Mayer became the youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company. As the CEO of Yahoo (which has now been bought for $4.8 billion by Verizon), Mayer assumed the lead shoes and came with quite the resume as a former Google VP. Take a look at this sample<\/a> and try not to jaw drop while doing so. Mayer is the youngest woman to ever make Fortune’s Most Powerful Women lis<\/a>t. In 2008, at\u00a0age 33 she nabbed the 50th spot on the list and by 2011 rose to number 38. While her schedule is demanding, in the past she has said, “I pace myself by taking a week-long vacation every four months.” She’s also an inspiration to all women: after accepting the CEO at Yahoo while she was pregnant she\u00a0rose to the job’s\u00a0demands, even amidst harsh criticism from the public. Now 41, Mayer maintained her role and also gave birth to two more\u00a0children, proving that you don’t have to sacrifice marriage and kids for career.<\/p>\n

Michelle Phan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michelle Phan is 29-years-old and has already built a $500 million beauty empire, according to Forbes<\/a><\/em>. What started as YouTube tutorials spun into a global beauty, wellness and inspirational phenomenon, and this was done all while Phan was struggling to make ends meet working as a waitress and trying to put herself through art school. She eventually had to drop out due to financial reasons, but that didn’t stop her for continuing her undeniable presence on and offline.\u00a0In 2011 she founded Ipsy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0wrote a book<\/a>. In 2015 she partnered with Endemol Beyond USA and formed the ICON Network. She has over 8.7 million YouTube subscribers, has created her own digital graphic book (HELIOS:FEMINA<\/em>), and the list goes on. All this and she hasn’t even hit 30 yet<\/a>.
